Element 32 twin slot wall shelving system

Wall Shelving Factsheet

If you have good, solid walls which are capable of bearing weight then hanging shelves off them makes for a very efficient use of space. Clearly this is not possible if the walls are simple, internal partitions unless you are prepared to take special steps when fitting (eg to make sure that you only screw into the wooden framework and not just the plasterboard) and to be very disciplined in terms of the amount of weight that you expect them to carry.

Element32 is a German system that has been around for a long while. Spares and accessories are readily available. It is, like a number of similar systems, based upon a pair of uprights which screw to the wall and brackets which then slot into the uprights - hence the system being referred to as Twin Slot.

The uprights are available in either white or chrome and measure 2400mm but can easily be cut down to size. The uprights have holes at regular intervals through which a screw can be put to fix them to the wall. The strength of the assembled system depends upon there being sufficient fixings in place and the use of suitable wallplugs for your type of wall.

The distance between uprights should be 1000mm in order that they can be used with the steel shelves and brackets which are available. There are also hanging bars and clothes rails which can be fitted into the uprights as long as they are 1000mm apart.

The other option for these uprights is the use of wood shelf brackets which are available in a variety of depths. Fix the uprights to the wall, slot-in  your wood shelf  brackets and then get some wood cut to the right size to make your shelf. If you have slatboard in other parts of your shop then the wood shelves can be matched to this - but make sure that shelves are fully edged so that they look properly finished.
